PhD candidate @ Uni. of Oregon

Angelique is currently a PhD candidate in Cris Niell’s lab, where she is studying visual processing in cephalopods. By developing new techniques that allow scientists to record brain activity in octopuses and squids, Angelique is asking questions such as ‘how does the octopus brain process polarization information’, and ‘what signals are neurons carrying in the squid brain?’

Research Skills

Throughout her PhD, Angelique has played a role in various projects that required her to gain skills in

  • Functional calcium imaging

  • Electrophysiology

  • Microinjections

External Funding

Angelique has found a love for grant writing and proposing large questions that will reveal something new about unique and fascinating animals. She has been awarded two prestigious fellowships during her PhD- the NSF GRFP in 2022, and the HHMI Gilliam Fellowship in 2024.

Research-based courses

Angelique has had the honor of taking and teaching two summer courses and the Marine Biological Laboratory. She was part of the:

  • Neural Systems & Behavior 2023 cohort

  • Inaugural Visual Neuroscience course Teaching Staff

Presentations

Angelique has given many presentations on her research for a wide range of audiences. From kindergarten classrooms to international neuroethology meetings, Angelique is an enthusiastic speaker and loves to share her passion for cephalopod neuroscience with others.
